"To invent an airplane is nothing. To build one is something. To fly is everything."
Otto Lilienthal

This book covers the second and third ideas above, “To build one” and “To fly one.”

Could I do it? Could I actually build a real airplane? Imagine how many people have asked this question. For many who did, all kinds of thoughts must have raced through their minds. All kinds of conflicting emotions began to surface. Certainly there’s doubt, and then the idea of a challenge. You start to imagine what it would be like to carry out a project of this sort. Weighing pros and cons and bouncing back and forth between I can, I can’t, and I should and I shouldn’t aren’t unusual and are to be welcomed since this forms an essential step in many decision making processes. To all who might consider a project like this, these arguments and ideas are repeated when thinking about cost, time, priorities, family considerations, self-doubt and over-confidence. Pros and cons will come easy and most find themselves close to the starting point even after much thought and discussion. What tipped the authors to the “moving ahead side?”

Getting rid of the fear of failing
“If you are afraid of striking out,
don’t go up to bat.”

A healthy dose of practical wisdom
“Unless you try something,
you’re forever destined to wonder, what might have been?”

Well over ten thousand experimental airplanes, (homebuilts), have been built and are flown by individuals from all walks of life. When one asks, “Could I do it?” The answer of course is, “Do you know what end of a hammer to pick up?” If the reply is yes, you can do it. Sounds silly? Not really. Read on and see what’s involved and what it takes. This is not a book on how to do it. Rather it’s a retelling of experiences and a mentioning of considerations and things to know that are part of the whole process. Whether you are already involved in building an airplane, seriously considering it, or just curious about what’s involved, this information will answer a lot of your questions and raise a number of new ones. The authors have told many, “We wish we had this information when we first started thinking about building an airplane.”

In this book, we’ll take you through the steps from the first time the idea of building an airplane occurs, to the information gathering stages, through decisions and construction activities, and finally through the paperwork, inspections and technicalities of making an airplane airworthy and legal to fly. And then through the initial flights and checkouts and the pure joy of being in the air: a trip from first rivet, to first flight, and through the first five years of flying. And finally, condition inspections, routine maintenance, and ongoing practices and experiences. This will not be instructions on how to build, fly, and maintain an airplane. Rather it is a collections of ideas, experiences, and considerations associated with choices, techniques, and practices for anyone considering this activity.

For the authors, there was never a long considered goal of building an airplane and there was no eureka moment. The idea came from a chance happening, but once the seed was planted, it grew straight and strong. There are occasionally adventures in life that turn out better than expected. This was one of them.
